Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu: A Sanctuary of Serenity and Elegance

MDO's Award-Winning Design: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

In the bustling city of Hangzhou, China, a tranquil oasis emerges. The Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu Clubhouse, designed by MDO, is a testament to the harmonious blend of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and contemporary design. This award-winning project is a sanctuary of serenity and elegance, offering a unique retreat from the stresses of everyday life.

The inspiration for the Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu Clubhouse stemmed from the calm surrounding landscape. MDO sought to develop an architectural language of purity, where every element contributes to a dialogue of serene tranquility. The lush landscape is reflected within the spaces through games of transparency and reflections. The design also pays homage to Chinese traditional craft, with a fully mortise and tenon joinery technique screen around the main staircase and an old brass pendant installation.

What sets the Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu Clubhouse apart is its commitment to creating an environment of relaxation and escape. As a social gathering place for residents, it serves as an island of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. The geometrical compositions, the choice of materials, and the attention to detail all contribute to the processional qualities of the spaces, welcoming visitors with silent transitions and inviting images.

The design realization of the clubhouse is marked by the use of white stone to emphasize the purity of the geometry, lending an abstract feeling to the composition. Timber populates the communal areas, adding warmth to the space. The spa areas are kept pure and ethereal through the use of stone and paint, creating a distance between the visitor and the architecture to allow for inner peace. The private areas display a higher amount of decoration and metals.

The clubhouse measures around 1860 m2, distributed over two floors. The design process was marked by a control of proportions, creating a system that arouses a sense of monumentality and purity. The most challenging elements to achieve were the mortise-and-tenon structure, which spans 9 meters without the use of any fixing material, and the hand-made art pendant in the center of the staircase, developed through a rigorous parametric rationalization and development alongside a local brass craftsman.

The Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu Clubhouse is the core of a new elegant residential development in Hangzhou. It serves as a gateway, bridging the architecture and the landscape. The design is distilled to express the pure fundamentals of architecture – light/shadow, space, materiality, and transparency. This project is a testament to MDO's commitment to creating spaces that reflect the harmony between tradition and modernity, nature and architecture, tranquility and elegance.

The Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu Clubhouse was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
